How to Choose a Hoodie Color for Your Skin Tone and Your Closet

You found a design you love, and then the color menu stops you cold. Black is safe, but is it boring? That forest green looks great on the model, but will it look great on you? Choosing a hoodie color does not have to be a guess. Two simple questions will get you to the right answer: what flatters your skin, and what works with the clothes you already own.

Step 1: Find your undertone

Your skin tone is how light or deep your skin is. Your undertone is the subtle color underneath, and it is what decides which shades make you look fresh and which make you look tired. There are three: warm, cool, and neutral. Here are three quick ways to check, in natural daylight:

  • The vein check. Look at the inside of your wrist. Veins that look greenish suggest a warm undertone. Bluish or purple suggests cool. If you cannot really tell, you are probably neutral.
  • The jewelry check. If gold tends to look better on you, you likely lean warm. If silver does, you likely lean cool. If both look good, neutral.
  • The white paper check. Hold a sheet of plain white paper next to your face. If your skin looks yellowish or golden beside it, you lean warm. If it looks pink or rosy, you lean cool.

These are guides, not rules. If the tests disagree with each other, treat yourself as neutral.

Step 2: Match hoodie colors to your undertone

UndertoneColors that tend to flatterWear with a little more care
WarmOlive and forest green, mustard, rust, burnt orange, brown, cream, warm redIcy pastels, stark bright white
CoolNavy, royal blue, charcoal, burgundy, emerald, lavender, true white, heather greyMustard, orange, yellow-based browns
NeutralAlmost everything; dusty and mid-tone shades are especially easy, such as sage, dusty rose, slate blueVery neon shades can overpower

Depth matters too. Contrast is usually your friend: lighter skin often stands out nicely against deeper colors like navy, forest green, and burgundy, while deeper skin tones carry bright and saturated colors beautifully, as well as crisp white and pastels. A color very close to your own skin tone can wash you out, whatever your undertone.

Step 3: Check it against your closet

A hoodie only earns its place if you actually wear it. Before you choose, open your closet and look at the bottom half:

  • Mostly blue jeans? Nearly every hoodie color works with denim. This is your chance to pick something with personality.
  • Mostly black pants or leggings? Black on black is sleek, but a color on top, like burgundy, green, or a bright shade, keeps the outfit from looking flat.
  • Khaki, tan, or olive bottoms? Navy, white, black, and cream sit well with earth tones. Avoid a hoodie that nearly matches your pants; close-but-not-quite looks like a mistake.
  • Lots of patterns or bright colors already? A neutral hoodie in black, grey, navy, or cream will tie everything together.

Think about your jackets as well. If you plan to layer, the hood and hem will show, so pick a color that looks good peeking out from your usual coat.

Step 4: Think about the print

With a graphic hoodie, the fabric color is the background of the artwork. Darker hoodies make bright and light-colored designs pop. Lighter hoodies give a softer look and suit designs with darker linework. If a design has a color you love in it, a hoodie in a quieter shade lets that color take the lead.

When you still cannot decide

  • Your first hoodie: black, navy, or charcoal. They go with everything, suit almost everyone, and hide everyday wear.
  • Your second hoodie: choose from your undertone column above. This is the one that will get you compliments.
  • Buying a gift: if you do not know the person’s undertone, stay with navy, charcoal, or forest green. These are the most forgiving shades across skin tones.

The best color is the one you will reach for on a cold morning without thinking. Use the chart to narrow it down, then trust the one you keep going back to. When you are ready, browse the current collection in our shop and try your shortlist against your favorite design.
